A new study shows that it’s not just that the drug is so potent that it can be dangerous, it’s also so effective that it can’t be used for any other purpose, including to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).
The research, conducted by Harvard Medical School and published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2006, was presented at a 2016 session of the annual meeting of the American Urological Association. The research, which involved more than 100 physicians, was presented in the context of a medical conference.
“It’s just an observation,” said study co-author Dr. James W. Kusser, a clinical professor of urology at Harvard Medical School. “The FDA approved Viagra in 1998, and it has been used to treat ED in men since the late 1990s.”
Viagra is an oral, prescription-only medicine for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It’s a type of drug called a PDE-5 inhibitor. When a man is sexually stimulated, it releases a chemical called cGMP, which relaxes the smooth muscle tissue that lines the penis. The penis is then hard and the blood vessels expand, allowing a man to achieve and maintain an erection.

“What we found was that taking the drug was effective, and we had evidence that it worked. In fact, it was more effective than sildenafil alone,” said Kusser.
The researchers also found that the men in the study were not experiencing ED symptoms, but that they had a higher likelihood of not using the drug, which may explain the high incidence of ED in the study participants. The researchers said they were not surprised by the findings.
The researchers said they did a preliminary analysis of the data to see whether the drugs affected the men’s ability to achieve and maintain an erection.
“It was important to know that these findings may be related to the way the men in the study responded to the study, as they were all men. In addition, the men were very young and did not have sexual activity, which may explain why these results were not statistically significant,” said Kusser.
The researchers analyzed data from men who filled out a questionnaire about their sexual activity, sexual performance and health.
“We found that there was no significant difference in the men’s ability to achieve and maintain an erection when the men were given Viagra or sildenafil. There was also a significant difference in the men’s ability to use the drug,” said Kusser.
A further analysis found that the men taking Viagra were less likely to experience ED symptoms, but this was not enough to conclude that the drug was not effective.
“It may not be an accurate reflection of men’s ability to achieve and maintain an erection,” said Kusser.
The study was published online in the Journal of Sexual Medicine in April of this year.
